About the York Rite

The York Rite is one of the principal appendant bodies of Freemasonry, open to Master Masons who desire to continue their Masonic journey through deeper instruction, fellowship, and service. It builds upon the foundation of the Blue Lodge by expanding on the lessons, symbols, and moral teachings introduced in the three degrees of Craft Masonry.

York Rite Masonry is not a higher rank or authority over the Blue Lodge. It is a continuation of Masonic education for those who choose to take part.

Why the York Rite Exists

Freemasonry has always emphasized lifelong learning. The York Rite exists to provide further light through additional degrees that explore themes of integrity, duty, faith, leadership, and service.

These degrees help a Mason:

  • Better understand the symbolism and teachings of the Blue Lodge
  • Strengthen his commitment to personal character and moral responsibility
  • Participate in charitable work and community service
  • Build lasting fraternal bonds with fellow Masons

Participation is voluntary, and each Mason progresses at his own pace.

The Three Bodies of the York Rite

The York Rite is composed of three distinct bodies, each offering its own degrees and lessons.

Royal Arch Chapter

The Chapter degrees focus on restoration, discovery, and completion. Many Masons consider the Royal Arch to provide meaningful context and clarity to the Master Mason degree.

Cryptic Council

The Council degrees emphasize preservation, loyalty, and responsibility. These degrees explore lessons tied closely to trust, stewardship, and the safeguarding of essential truths.

Commandery

The Commandery is open to Christian Master Masons. Its orders focus on discipline, service, and devotion, drawing inspiration from chivalric traditions and the principles of Christian faith.

Each body meets separately, but together they form the York Rite experience.

Who Can Join the York Rite

To be eligible for the York Rite, a man must:

  • Be a Master Mason in good standing with a recognized Masonic Lodge
  • Believe in a Supreme Being
  • Meet the requirements of the individual bodies

Membership in the Commandery requires a profession of Christian faith.

York Rite in the Lawton Area

The York Rite bodies serving the Lawton area welcome Master Masons from local lodges and surrounding communities. Meetings provide opportunities for education, fellowship, and service, while maintaining the traditions and dignity of Freemasonry.

Masons from outside the immediate Lawton area are also welcome to visit and participate.
